Running Log - 6 Miles in Bahia

Tonight, I did a shorter loop along the marsh in Bahia with my dog Lucky, the Jack Russell Terrier. He was so happy that he looked a lot like the little guy in the picture here. Lucky has more of a broken coat and has black on his head, but I thought the smile and the tongue were pretty close.

When I wasn't laughing at Lucky, I was enjoying the sunset and fading light as I ran out from the base of Bahia, where Topaz starts at the end of Bahia Drive, and back. In all, it was a 6 mile loop of pure dust and dirt, and easy going the whole way. A lot of gentle up and down, but no daunting hill at the end made for a smooth and easy run. A great way to end the day and the month of August.

Novato Stingers vs Central Marin Chargers - Aug. 30

Robbie Cassee catches a pass from Tommy Sanz to open the game!

I spent yesterday afternoon taking photos at the Novato vs. Central Marin youth football games. While I had a great time on the sidelines, I ended up getting a lot more sun than I needed. I think my forehead is going to peel later this week.

The photos from the Novato Stingers game are now available on the 2009 Novato Stingers Shutterfly site. I also took pictures during the Novato Yellow Jackets game and those photos are posted on the Novato Yellow Jackets Football Shutterfly site.

Game Summary

The Novato Stingers opened their 2009 season with a hard-fought 14-0 win over the Central Marin Chargers at Terra Linda High School. After a promising opening play for a 25-yard completion over the middle from quarterback Tommy Sanz to tight-end Robbie Cassée, the game devolved into a tight, defensive struggle and the game was tied 0-0 at half-time.

The Stingers opened it up in the third-quarter with a strong drive capped by a rushing touchdown by half-back Ben Putman and a Sanz-to-Putman-to-Daniel “Hoppy” Hopkins rushing point-after-touchdown (PAT). On the following drive, Novato scored after another drive on a long pass from Sanz to Cassée in the end-zone. Putman rushed around the left side untouched for the second PAT pushing the score to 14-0.

Novato nearly scored again on an interception by cornerback Alec Ball, but a blocking in the back penalty brought the ball back to the point of the turnover.

“This is a great way to start our season,” said head-coach John Jones. Jones also pointed out that “our kids played a complete game against a really tough opponent today.”

Game standouts included the entire Novato defense, which held the Chargers to only one first-down all day and the Stingers offensive-line which effectively protected the quarterback and opened up many holes for a swarm of Novato runners. The Stingers starting offensive-line is Sam Mina (C), Daniel Hopkins (G), Ryan Johnson (T), Johnny Viezcas (T) and John “J.P.” Hernandez (G). The equally effective second-string is Brandon Camal (C), Anthony Balestrieri (T), Leondardo Madrigal (G), Joseph Navarro (G) and Drew Larkin (T).

Final Score: Novato Stingers 14, Central Marin Chargers 0

Here are some additional photo highlights from the game.

Running Log - 7 Miles in Novato

Today it was slow and steady on another go round on the shorter loop from my house. I returned on Atherton yet again so I could make it back up the final hill. I didn't feel terrible, but I just didn't feel really strong either. All-in-all another slow-motion run again today.

Novato Stingers Football - Scrimmage - Aug. 22

My son Robbie is playing football again this year so we're thrilled to be back. This year, he's a Stinger, and last weekend the team played a scrimmage in El Sobrante against Central Marin, Rancho Cotati, Tri-Cities and Southern Marin. The team looked pretty good after only a few weeks of practice so we are all excited to see how they do with the regular season starting this weekend.

As I started doing 5 years ago, I get to work the sidelines with my camera and try to capture the action. Sometimes I get lucky and get some great shots. Even if I don't, I take a lot of photos and look forward to creating a slideshow at the end of the year which is shown at the team banquet.

Since we have a whole season to go, we'll be posting the photos on Shutterfly after each game. You can check out the latest action at the Novato Stingers Shutterfly Site.

Here are a few more shots from the scrimmage:

Marc Alvarez runs to daylight against Rancho Cotati

Robbie Cassee catches a pass against Rancho Cotati

Alec Ball on the way to 6 against Rancho Cotati

Running Log - 7 Miles in Indian Valley

Enjoyed another leisurely 7 miles in Indian Valley after dropping Robbie at football practice. Today was a little cooler so I felt good even though it was a second straight running day.

Started at the field at San Jose Middle School, ran past the Indian Valley College parking lots, through the softball fields and then hit the dirt. Did a kind of figure eight path from there, going to the lake, then up and over the switchbacks, out to the trailhead, back up and the Ad Schwint trail, pack to the main path and then a reversal over the switchbacks to the pond and then all the way back to the field.

The MMOB Daily Quote - August 22nd

Today's quote is from James Boswell.

Boswell was a Scottish lawyer and author, best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. Interestingly, his name is the genesis for the term Boswellian which refers to a constant companion and observer. Appropriate, given the nature of today's quote.

"We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is a last drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindnesses there is at last one which makes the heart run over."

The portrait of Mr. Boswell was painted by George Willison in 1765.

Running Log - 7.9 Miles in Novato

Okay, so the picture doesn't really mean anything but it sure does grab your attention doesn't it!?

I did my favorite loop from my house: up the hill, out School to Atherton, then much of the way down Olive, crossing back over Chase/Cherry/Armstrong to Atherton, then out Binford and along the marsh and through the cemetary, up Bugeia/Bahia and then all the way up the hill home. Pretty strong all the way through, even up the final hills. All-in-all a good day on the dirt and pavement.
